Description

Yanki First Flush Darjeeling Tea.

“Yanki tea is one of the first Darjeeling teas of its kind — small-batch, small-farm, and crafted entirely on the cooperative’s own terms.”

The story behind every cup

Yanki First Flush Darjeeling  tea comes from sprawling commercial estates. Yanki is different. The Darjeeling Orthodox Small Growers Welfare Society was founded by Yankhu Tamang — known simply as Yanki — and her son, experimental tea maker Allan Rai. Their mission was bold: give small family farmers a direct route to market, ownership over their craft, and the ability to produce genuinely exceptional tea on their own terms.

Perched at 2,100 metres (7,000 ft) in the Mirik Valley of Darjeeling, the cooperative’s gardens receive daily Himalayan mist and cool mountain air — the irreplaceable terroir that makes Darjeeling first flush so prized worldwide. The bushes — a blend of clonal cultivars P312, AV2, and RR — are tended with natural (chemical-free) cultivation methods, though the estate has no formal organic certification.

Yanki First Flush Darjeeling

Every spring, from March to April, Tea Flush the year’s most delicate new growth is carefully handpicked — strictly two leaves and a bud — and processed as orthodox whole-leaf tea. The result is a cup of remarkable lightness and complexity: a luminous golden liquor with the signature muscatel character, floral brightness, and a finish that lingers long after the last sip.

Tasting notes

The dry leaves carry an inviting aroma of fresh hay, light florals, and a characteristic peanut butter–like sweetness typical of high-quality first flush Darjeeling. In the cup: a pale golden liquor, brisk and refreshing, with layers of muscatel grapesweet almond, delicate florals, and a hint of kumquat. A gentle astringency provides structure, while the long finish is smooth and warming.

Brewing Guide — Hot

  1. Measure the leaf: 1 heaped teaspoon (2–2.5 g) per 200–220 ml of water
  2. Water temperature: 85–90°C (185–195°F) — never fully boiling; preserves delicate florals
  3. 3 Steep time: 3–4 minutes. Re-steep a second time for 5 minutes
  4. 4 Serve plain: No milk — it masks the muscatel and floral character. A slice of lemon is optional

Brewing Guide — Cold Brew & Iced

  1. Add leaf to cold water Use 1 tsp per 200 ml of cold filtered water in a glass jar
  2. Refrigerate 8–12 hours (overnight). Low and slow extraction maximises sweetness

Yanki First Flush Darjeeling Tea Frequently Asked Questions —

What is Yanki First Flush Darjeeling Tea?
Yanki First Flush is a small-batch orthodox loose leaf black tea harvested in spring (March–April) from the Yanki cooperative’s gardens in Mirik Valley, Darjeeling, at 7,000 feet elevation. Founded by Yankhu Tamang, the cooperative supports independent small family tea farmers in the Darjeeling region.
What does Yanki First Flush taste like?
Yanki First Flush has a light golden liquor with characteristic Darjeeling muscatel notes, delicate florals, sweet almond, and a hint of kumquat. It is refreshing and brisk with a light-to-medium body, gentle astringency, and a smooth, lingering finish.
How do I brew Yanki First Flush Darjeeling Tea?
Use 1 heaped teaspoon (2–2.5 g) per 200 ml of water heated to 85–90°C. Steep for 3–4 minutes. Serve without milk for the full floral and muscatel experience. It can be re-steeped once for 5 minutes.
Is Yanki tea organic?
Yanki tea is cultivated using natural, chemical-free methods — no pesticides or synthetic fertilisers. However, it does not hold a formal organic certification. It is described as “natural cultivation.”
What makes Yanki different from large estate Darjeeling teas?
Yanki is produced by a small-farm cooperative, not a large commercial estate. The cooperative owns its own processing equipment, ensuring higher plucking standards, more uniform orthodox processing, and direct control over quality. Buying Yanki directly supports the livelihoods of small-farm growers in the Darjeeling district.
Does Yanki First Flush have caffeine?
Yes. Yanki First Flush is a black tea with medium caffeine content — generally lower than breakfast teas but present enough to provide a gentle, clear energy lift without the jitteriness of stronger teas.
