Description
Yanki First Flush Darjeeling Tea.
“Yanki tea is one of the first Darjeeling teas of its kind — small-batch, small-farm, and crafted entirely on the cooperative’s own terms.”
The story behind every cup
Yanki First Flush Darjeeling tea comes from sprawling commercial estates. Yanki is different. The Darjeeling Orthodox Small Growers Welfare Society was founded by Yankhu Tamang — known simply as Yanki — and her son, experimental tea maker Allan Rai. Their mission was bold: give small family farmers a direct route to market, ownership over their craft, and the ability to produce genuinely exceptional tea on their own terms.
Perched at 2,100 metres (7,000 ft) in the Mirik Valley of Darjeeling, the cooperative’s gardens receive daily Himalayan mist and cool mountain air — the irreplaceable terroir that makes Darjeeling first flush so prized worldwide. The bushes — a blend of clonal cultivars P312, AV2, and RR — are tended with natural (chemical-free) cultivation methods, though the estate has no formal organic certification.
Yanki First Flush Darjeeling
Every spring, from March to April, Tea Flush the year’s most delicate new growth is carefully handpicked — strictly two leaves and a bud — and processed as orthodox whole-leaf tea. The result is a cup of remarkable lightness and complexity: a luminous golden liquor with the signature muscatel character, floral brightness, and a finish that lingers long after the last sip.
Tasting notes
The dry leaves carry an inviting aroma of fresh hay, light florals, and a characteristic peanut butter–like sweetness typical of high-quality first flush Darjeeling. In the cup: a pale golden liquor, brisk and refreshing, with layers of muscatel grape, sweet almond, delicate florals, and a hint of kumquat. A gentle astringency provides structure, while the long finish is smooth and warming.
